How to Select a Web Host

You’ve decided you want to create a website, but you’re not sure how to select a web host. This simple web hosting intro can help you narrow down some of the options so you can make an informed decision.

Understanding Web Hosting

A web host opens a space for your website on the Internet, a resting place for your site out in cyberspace. The web host provides the physical servers that your site will run on. To work with a web host, you will need to:

  1. Purchase a domain name
  2. Register with a web hosting company
  3. Point your domain to your web hosting company’s name servers
  4. Create web pages that reside on your web hosting company’s servers

You can either build HTML pages yourself by hand or much more simply through a content management system such as WordPress.  For more about creating web pages, read How To Create Web Content.

  1. Very nice article! Those four steps are all you need to get started. First I purchased my domain from godaddy.com and then for step two I found 99webs.info which lets you host for free just for posting in their forum! Great way to get started and they have many features 🙂 Step three was as simple as logging into godaddy and the 99webs admin helped me change my DNS to their name servers. Step four was a breeze to get my forum up as they have Fantastico software for one click installs. I’m not good at manually installing themes but the admin took care of it and I can now run a forum 😀 Best of luck to everyone with their web endeavors!

  2. Kevin, thanks for the comments and I’m glad you had success on setting up your new site.
